Internship program

Program Mission

Our internship program is designed to integrate work-readiness training and an introduction to entrepreneurial endeavors to all participants through exposure to various aspects of our thriving aquaponic urban farm. Our internship component is a hands-on, skills-based program that fully complements the participants’ formal education while demonstrating how the entrepreneurial success of SKYPONIC™ Farming can be applied to their own entrepreneurial dreams.

Objectives

  • We will offer 6 eight-week internships annually—three in the fall and three in the spring semesters.
  • Our interns come from New York City’s non-profit youth development organizations such as The Children’s Aid Society and Madison Square Boys and Girls Club. We will also work with New York City’s public school system.

Starting a Program with Us

Organizations that we partner with must provide Intern Program Coordinators (work-readiness instructor, computer lab instructor, teacher, or career guidance counselor) responsible for intern recruitment of juniors and seniors, maintaining a 10 intern limit during a cycle, traveling with interns for farm visits, and helping to coordinate workshops at their respective organizations.

  • We will select 5 outstanding interns to continue their internships throughout the summer by working on the farm as their Summer Youth Employment Program job. SKYPONIC™  Farming will register with DYCD as a summer employment site for students who have completed our internship program.
  • All interns will receive the complete SKYPONIC™  Farming curriculum, which includes the following: workshops in work-readiness training, aquaponics and urban farming; how to be an entrepreneur/finding your path to success; hands-on work at the farm; weekly webinars and 24 hour web camera access to tanks, bio-filters, and plants.
  • Our summer internship program offers three days of hands-on farm work per week, workshops designed to further develop intern’s interview and presentation skills, and participating in whole sale and restaurant marketing presentations.
  • SKYPONIC™  Farming training tools include web-based correspondence with our staff, aquaponics training manuals and work-readiness curriculum guides.

Once having completed the internship program, our interns will walk away with a hands-on work experience, 8 weeks of youth development workshops, polished resumes detailing their experience with Skyponic Farming, and an entrepreneur’s package, including a 5-year plan, and an entrepreneurial business plan outline. Five summer interns will have the opportunity as Skyponics Intern Reps to network with vendors, clients, and sponsoring agencies such as, the Department of Education of the City of New York, the New York Hotel and Restaurant Association, and the New York Retail Association.

School Program

Educational Packages

Are you ready to start a lab, rooftop or playground garden system? Schools will have a choice of three educational packages.

Package A

We visit your school/organization to determine the perfect system for the space the you have available, be it lab, outdoor space, or both.  We then construct the grow space and provide maintenance and instructional support.  We provide weekly hands-on workshops, educational materials, including teacher coaching and student support materials, access to on-line tutorials, and networking with other schools.  Schools must retain Package A for at least a full school year.

Package B

Skyponics conducts an in school space assessment.  We will design a system that fits the school’s needs, implement the system, provide coaching sessions, connect their growing classroom to our interactive website, provide educational webinar.

Package C

Schools who reach us through the website can register for our distance evaluation, which will allow them to fill out their grow space specs. We will send a system matching the school/organizational needs, with system implementation instructions and access to educational webinars, an online professional development tool.
